Here's how you can install Android 2.3 Gingerbread on your HTC Droid Eris. You can do the installation using ROM Manager along with the Kaos 6 Gingerbread ROM.
The HTC Droid Eris wasn't a very popular phone. It premiered as a mid-range Android smartphone when there was many other better options already available. It was a good hit though, and is also still available on Verizon.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread was launched of a month back and it is officially available only about the Nexus S. However, there are numerous unofficial Android 2.3 ROMs going swimming for most popular devices such as the HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid X, HTC Desire and also the HTC Legend.
Even the HTC Droid Eris comes with an Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM available, that includes a few bugs but is effective. It is an experimental build, and it is being installed your own risk. It includes every one of the Google apps for Android. Most of the features work nicely, but there are many issues too. The new version is very stable and runs without crashing. I would recommend the Kaos 6 Gingerbread ROM for the Droid Eris.
In this tutorial, I will explain ways to install Android 2.3 Gingerbread in your HTC Droid Eris.
1. Download the Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM for your HTC Droid Eris.

2. Connect your phone for a PC, or make use of a storage device reader to repeat the Android 2.3 ROM to your SD card. Insert the SD card back to your phone.
3. Download the ROM Manager application from Android Market (Clockworkmod ROM Manager) and do the installation. ROM Manager can help you install, back up and restore ROMs easily.
4. Start ROM Manager and find the Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery option to install the recovery image which you will need if things go wrong. Also find the Backup Current ROM choice to require a backup of the current ROM and save it in your device.
5. Now visit Install ROM from SD Card to set up the Android 2.3 Gingerbread Kaos v6 ROM. Select the Wipe Data and Cache option prior to starting the ROM flashing.
In a few momemts, your phone should reboot and this will be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
If you've got any issues with ROM Manager, just boot to the recovery mode manually and install the Android 2.3 ROM directly.
Also note, that you should have root access on the HTC Droid Eris as a way to flash ROMs using ROM Manager.
