When a file is deleted or Recycle Bin is emptied, the information its content has is not really erased. Instead, the room it occupies on the disk or memory is marked as readily available for reuse. If you realize your mistake immediately, special undelete software should be able to recover an accidentally deleted file. The longer you allow it, though, the higher the opportunity that the data will be overwritten, rendering the file lost forever. For this reason, it is advisable to taking action immediately to increase your odds of success.
The file-recovery software we'll use is known as Disk Digger. However, don't download or do the installation until we indicate how you can do this. Disk Digger is shareware, and although it'll allow you to recover files without registering, you will get a nag screen for each file until you pay for the $15 fee.
Recovering Files from External Media
1) First we'll demonstrate how you can recover files from external media for instance a USB memory stick or perhaps your digital camera's storage device. In this case, it's perfectly safe to download DiskDigger to your hard drive. Open your browser, go to diskdigger.org, click Download and Download now, then save the Zip file to your Windows Desktop. Double-click the Zip file and you will see two files: license.txt and diskdigger.exe. Rather than installing permanently on your own system, DiskDigger runs using this .exe file; double-click it to perform it. Depending on which version of Windows you've, or whether you might have WinZip or similar software installed, you might be motivated to extract or run the file - choose Run.
2) The opening screen shows all of the disks, so find the one containing your lost files and then click Next. Various options are presented. For now, accept the defaults by simply clicking on Next again. Your disk is scanned and then any deleted files listed; this may take a moment. If this works, and many files are located, go to Step 3. If not, click Back and select Dig Deeper. This time, when you click Next, you're shown more options; we suggest you accept the defaults and click on Next.
3) The files found might not be shown using correct filenames however with partial filenames or sector numbers, for example Sector 109450. This isn't beneficial in identifying lost files. DiskDigger supplies a method of previewing the lost images or, for other file types, exploring the initial few bytes. Select the file in the list on the left and select the Preview or even the 'First few bytes' tab. The Thumbnail option inside View menu can be useful; it shows small images in place of the sector numbers within the list. For non-graphic files, if your initial few bytes don't identify your file, you might need to try recovering files speculatively and opening them within the relevant application.
4) Once you've identified your missing files, be sure they're selected within the list about the left and then click 'Save selected files...' on the top-left in the screen. Hold down Ctrl when you select each sector to decide on several. In the 'Browse for Folder' dialog box, pick the folder which you would like to restore the file (this must not be on the same device since the lost file) and then click OK. The missing files is going to be saved with names including sector546026.JPG, so rename them using more desirable descriptions.
Recovering Files from your Hard Disk
5) If your deleted file is on your own hard disk, do not attempt to download DiskDigger onto that disk - it might find yourself overwriting the file you're looking to recover. There are two possible answers to this predicament. The easier, but less reliable option would be to download DiskDigger with a USB memory stick and other external storage tool and run it following that. Follow the process described in Steps two to four - however in Step 2 select the hard disk drive rather than external media, as well as in Step 4 decide to save the recovered file with an external device. This last point is important - never a single thing that may write in your hard drive unless you're sure you have got your missing files back.
6) There's a level of risk connected to the process described in Step 5, because there's a chance that the application that's running - as well as Windows itself - will write to the harddrive behind the scenes. The safer choices to modify your PC off at the wall - shutting Windows down can cause any settings being saved to disk - and after that install the disk to another PC being a secondary drive before wanting to recover your files.
