The early favourite around the first day with the meeting was The Midnight Club around 10-1 with What A Friend, Backstage and Oscar Time available around 12/1. By Friday last year's winner Don't Push It had attracted plenty of support and was being backed right down from 14s to 11. All horses shortened around the day and merely prior to off the Midnight Club was in to 15/2 favourite from Don't Push It and Silver By Nature both 9/1.
Stories
Many from the horses had potentially great stories in it. Oscar Time was ridden by amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen, winner with the Gold Cup on his family's Long Run and targeting an unprecedented big race double. Bluesea Cracker was hoping to function as the first mare to win since Nickel Coin in 1951 and had been bought by last year's winning owner J P McManus particularly for the race. Silver By Nature would function as the first grey winner since Nicalaus Silver in 1961 and also the first Scottish winner since Rubstic in 1979. Conditions

The Race
There was no false start although That's Rhythm erratically jumped the sawdust line at the start and also the field was fairly well grouped early to take the first fence which claimed the 1st casualty, when That's Rhythm (50/1) fell. Prominent early were Santa's Son, Killyglen, Ballabriggs and Hello Bud. At the second fence BecauseIcouldntsee (16/1) fell lowering Vic Venturi (50/1) who had nowhere to go. All cleared the third with Ballabriggs briefly using lead, however the giant Calgary Bay (33/1) came to grief on the 4th in addition to Ornais (100/1). The 5th claimed no victims however the 6th, Becher's Brook, proved very difficult. Dooneys Gate (50/1), The Tother One (50/1), and Or Noir De Somoza (50/1) all fell and West End Rocker (33/1) was brought down.
By now horses and jockeys were obtaining the hang from the fences and the 7th, the Canal Turn, the 8th and 9th jumps were all cleared without incident. Santa's Son and Killyglen shared the lead. At the 10th Tidal Bay (28/1) unseated his jockey and Quolibet (100/1) also unseated within the 11th. Grand Slam Hero (66/1) fell at the 13th. Ballabriggs, being settled in around third had moved up for the join the leaders at this time and secured the lead within the 15th fence, The Chair, jumping magnificently. At the 16th Quinz (14/1) was pulled up- he was later reported to own burst a blood vessel. Can't Buy Time (33/1) bowed out in the 18th along with the field continued to follow along with Ballabriggs and Killyglen since they bypassed the 20th fence. The 23rd, Becher's seemed to be bypassed as vets tended a fallen horse about the landing side, so only 28 fences were jumped with this renewal. Majestic Concorde (20/1) unshipped his jockey Robbie McNamara when his saddle slipped on the Canal Turn, the 24th.
Don't Push It had moved up from the race and was at the 1st ten since they considered fulfill the last fences. Killyglen have been track of the pace throughout and was still third when falling in the 27th, the location where the jockeys of Santa's Son (100/1) and What a Friend (12-1), cried enough and pulled up their tiring mounts. Arbor Supreme (20/1) blundered away his rider on the 28th and past hero Comply Or Die (25/1) was pulled up in the same fence. Hello Bud was the final to stop and pulled up in the 29th jump. Up front and in contention on the last were Niche Market, Big Fella Thanks and Don't Push It behind Ballabriggs and Oscar Time. Oscar Time was stalking Ballabriggs but in the last he cannot grab anything more. Ballabriggs was gallant within the run on the line and was able to keep a comfortable distance between himself and the nearest rival to obtain the win.
Aftermath
The evidence from the toll taken from the sweltering conditions was clear as both winning rider Jason Maguire and Tony McCoy with third placed Don't Push It leapt in the saddle recognising that their mounts were exhausted. Stable staff threw buckets of water over the horses plus some received oxygen to help you their recovery. For the very first time in living memory the jockey walked to the winner's enclosure alone, buffeted by reporters and interviewers, and also the horse was tended to separately and taken immediately towards the stables. Donald McCain assured reporters the horse was recovering, explaining to interviewers; 'He's tired. He got tired at Cheltenham. He gives everything. He doesn't save anything.'

Fatalities
Two horses died inside the big race this season. Ornais was killed instantly, breaking his neck in his fall.His body cannot be moved over time to allow for the opposite runners to jump a fence where he died, which is why the 20th fence was missed. Dooneys Gate had to get examined by veterinary officers to ascertain if he could be saved, though the sad proper diagnosis of a broken back meant he to get euthanised. Most other reports on fallers and horses that have been brought down are positive.
